CHAPTER EIGHT
CNTV’S SHANGHAI OFFICE picked up after three rings and she wondered which of three senior producers was doing the graveyard shift. A woman barked into the receiver, long distance.
Kitty’s eyelids squeezed closed. ‘Evening, Mei-Xiu...’
Her Wicked Step-Colleague.
‘Kitty? Where the hell is your story?’ her producer said in clipped English.
Hello, Kitty, how are you? I heard you had an emergency landing in the sub-arctic. Hope you’re okay...
‘Did you get the voiceover track I filed?’ Kitty cut in. ‘And the script?’
‘Wen-Hau was looking at it today,’ Mei snipped. ‘But it’s not much to work with. I need the raw vision.’
Yeah she did—if Mei wanted to file the story herself.
‘I was up all night cutting it,’ Kitty stressed, down the line. And not sending the vision until it was fully cut was the only way she would keep control of the story. ‘I’ll get it to you tomorrow.’
‘Oh, sure,’ Mei-Xiu quipped and Kitty had no trouble imagining her perfectly made-up face turning ugly. ‘Tomorrow, the next day. What’s the rush? It’s just the Sunday feature.’
‘I’m still in Churchill,’ Kitty said, extra loud to compensate for the long distance. ‘I’m wait-listed but—’
Mei’s reply could have stripped paint. She had quite the grasp of English colloquialisms when she wanted to. ‘Do you know how many correspondents would kill for that feature spot?’
Yes. Intimately. She’d been them for so long.
‘Tomorrow,’ she promised, though her heart wasn’t in it.
Mei scowled. It saturated her voice. ‘Arctic tomorrow or Chinese tomorrow?’
Right... Because it was already tomorrow in Shanghai. That invisible clock that constantly ticked in Kitty’s ears kicked up a notch. Maybe she should call the airport back... But no, she could edit this story much better from here than she could sitting in a crowded airport with insufficient Wi-Fi to go around.
‘I’m on it, Mei. Trust me.’
Yeah. That wasn’t going to happen. Nobody trusted anyone else in their game. Right now she was threatening to make Mei-Xiu look bad to the programme director and Mei wasn’t going to take that sitting down. She’d climbed about as high as she was ever going to and younger, shinier performers were coming up under her all the time. Mei was desperate enough to bin any story she did send and just say she never received it.
‘You file by Thursday or I file something for you.’
The phone went dead.
Goodbye to you, too...
Kitty flopped back onto her bed, exhausted already, and stared sideways out of the massive picture window. Out back, the dark trees were dusted with snow that hadn’t quite managed to thaw out from overnight. So pretty... It was tempting just to lose herself in that picturesque vista rather than apply herself to a story she was rapidly losing heart for.
She rolled over and reached for her laptop, which had the first five and a half minutes of her eight-minute feature already cut from last night’s editing session. Will had left her to it on getting back from the bus trip—he’d been a little bit too relieved, she’d thought—and busied himself elsewhere.
